Port wine is rich and sweet. However, if you want to get the full port sipping experience, you should use a proper port sipper. Unlike wine, the key with port is to avoid contact with air. When held properly, the glass allows your hand to warm the port which causes the port to release the hidden characteristics of the wine. When sipping the wine through the stem, the top is covered so as to prevent oxygenation and draw the aromatics which would otherwise escape, through the port. With the proper sipper and technique, you'll experience all of the flavours and aromas that the winemaker intended.
